About

Teaching Our Own is the home-on-the-www of Angie Maniam-Ng. Homemaking, homeschooling, parenting, Singapore, books, The Home Library, etc, are my current interests, but all sorts of exciting things happen to us, so there will be topics that come out from absolutely nowhere. :D

  3. Hello

I am a journalist with the Straits Times newspaper, and am trying to do a feature on families who home-school their kids, their reasons for doing so, the benefits they see as compared to enrolling them in full-time schools etc.

Would it be okay if I interview you, as you seem to have been doing this for some time now.

We can speak over the phone, but it would be great if I could meet you in person and speak to your children as well.

My email is limze@sph.com.sg. Thank you very much for your time.

  4. Dear Angie, I have saw your website & was very Excited!

I am also one of the rare Singaporean parents who would like to exempt my kids from the compulsory education.

In between, I have friends who would like to homeschool their kids but their CV or education background might not be degree holders & very likely won’t be allowed by MOE. Hence do any member of the group have similar issues or have any advise?

    A million thanks.

    • Hi there Han and thanks for leaving a message here. Yes you are rare indeed! I believe there is 1 homeschooler for every 1000 school-going children in Singapore. We are just glad that the Ministry of Education makes homeschooling possible in Singapore. There are no rules about the academic achievements of parents intending to homeschool. You are required to submit your CV together with your proposed syllabus for the 4 examinable subjects (English, Mother Tongue, Math, Science), plus your proposal for integrating National Education into your curriculum. And also your proposed time-table. Approval is at the discretion of the MOE, and yes in the past, non-graduates have been granted approval to homeschool. If you are not already part of the homeschool group, I would advise that you sign up for membership at http://groups.yahoo.com/group/singaporehg/. You will then be “plugged in” to the various activities organised by the group and will have the opportunity to pose your questions to the larger community. If your child is still at a pre-primary school age, you should sign up here: http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SingaporeHGpreschool/. Hope this helps!

  5. A million thanks for your Great Advise Angie. They are great advise indeed!

In between, are there such cases whereby justification was made to MOE that a small group of graduates parent forming up a Homeschool Group covering those less educated parents who would also like their kids to be home-School?

Thanks again & will be signing up for http://groups.yahoo.com/group/singaporehg/. now :)

    • Under the guidelines for homeschooling, group teaching is disallowed. We are not allowed to send our children to a group class for primary education in the 4 examinable subjects. Hope to “see” you in the yahoo group!
